LANSING – Rep. Bruce Caswell has announced that the Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) approved a rural MEGA tax credit Tuesday (February 15th) for the Metalloid Corporation for its planned facility in Sturgis. Metalloid will receive $227,898 in tax credits over a five-year period. The company plans to establish a new manufacturing operation in Sturgis, generating an estimated 30 new jobs in the area. Metalloid decided to locate its first Michigan facility in Sturgis, having chosen it over other possible sites in Indiana and Texas.

“I welcome Metalloid to Sturgis and look forward to hearing of their success in coming years,” said Caswell. “I applaud the company for investing in Michigan over other states. The jobs that Metalloid will create will help to spur further investment within St. Joseph County, while creating supporting jobs elsewhere throughout our state.”  (Bruce Caswell audio clip – :17)

Metalloid Corporation is based in Huntington, Indiana and makes metalworking fluids for the automotive and manufacturing industries.

In commenting on the announcement, Sturgis City Manager Michael Hughes indicated that receiving the MEGA tax credit is considered a “critical step” in bringing the business to Sturgis, but not a final one.  City officials have been working with the company on the possibility of locating in Sturgis for several months and are hopeful the granting of the MEGA tax credit will move the project along.

According to the application filed with MEGA, Metalloid would invest $365,000 to locate in Sturgis and estimates creating 30 jobs over five years should the project come to pass.
